The road from a crappy Hollywood apartment to a hilltop rock-star manor is fraught with pitfalls and potholes and dudes who fry their frontal lobes on acid, coke, and dope. Still, if the aspiring guitar idol keeps his eyes peeled, he will spy some great tits on the way, such as the rack of Dandy Warhols keyboard tickler Zia McCabe, vibrantly bopping during the power-pop antics caught in DiG! (2004). A sort of dual-edged documentary, DiG! charts the simultaneous implosion of Los Angeles psychedelic stuntmen The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the global popularity of the comparatively mellow Dandy Warhols from Oregon. Talent, grand ambitions, and dark charisma collide in a crash-and-burn tragedy of psychotic underachievement and desperate commercialism that could not be any more unsettling and cautionary if it had all been scripted.
