Karma can be a killer, particularly for a pair of murderous, lust-struck sweethearts, the type of delicious but doomed couple that is forever claiming the screen in French cinema. The young couplers of Les Amants criminels (1999) are a pair of attractive, sexually engaged teenagers who kill a classmate on very slight provocation. After burying their dead school buddy deep in the woods, the crafty adolescents are kidnaped by a hulking bisexual mountain man who has an unsavory habit of eating human flesh. The title Les Amants criminels translates to "Criminal Lovers," and the ensuing twists of affection most certainly violate the criminal code, at least in this country, but everybody looks quite self-possessed and stylish while doing so.
