Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021)

Great Nudity!

Review

If David Cronenberg and David Lynch had a baby in the mid-90s who started creating television shows in the 2020s, they'd have probably come up with something akin to Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor. Alita: Battle Angel (2019) star Rosa Salazar plays Lisa Nova, an aspiring filmmaker who moves to Los Angeles at the height of the indie cinema boom of the 90s and takes a meeting with washed up producer Lou Burke (Eric Lange) who thinks the young director could be his ticket back to the big time. Of course, that's merely a pretense for what is to come on this astonishingly trippy and surreal journey through the seamy underbelly of Hollywood's sex and gender politics at the time. As Lisa immerses herself in the celebrity scene, she soon discovers that she's much more likely to be exploited than she is to realize her dream of turning her student film into a full blown feature. At one party, she is introduced to Boro (the always amazing Catherine Keener) a self-professed witch who offers Lisa the chance to achieve karmic revenge against those who have wronged her, taking her on a journey through her past and present via some hallucinogenic drugs. And this is merely the pretext for what's to come on this unbelievable, one of a kind series! Rosa Salazar goes nude on the show several times, baring her breasts in the bathtub and later letting a guy fist an open wound in her abdomen—hello Cronenberg! Throw in a lusty lesbian scene between Rosa and Siena Werber and you've got yourself the makings for a hell of a party of one!
