When Things Were Rotten

No Nudity

Review

Long before Mel Brooks made his mediocre “Robin Hood” spoof Men in TightsABC explored a similar premise with When Things Were Rotten. The title apparently refers to the days of yore, when there was no refrigeration. The meat grew maggoty, the milk curdled--bad times for everyone! This spin on the Robin Hood legend portrayed the Prince of Sherwood as a complete idiot, leading a band of even bigger incompetents. Lucky for them that Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham were even more incompetent or they would have all been slaughtered in the pilot episode. Rounding out the circle of stupidity was Maid Marion, the biggest twit of the bunch. The show, which debuted in 1975, lasted three months and was never heard from again. Though most of the cast was relatively unknown, it did star Eight is Enough’s Dick Van Pattenas Friar Tuck and The Love Boat’s Bernie Kopell as Alan-a-Dale. Yup, sounds like crap all right. As for Maid Marian, she may have been portrayed as a ditz, but at least she was a hot-looking ditz. Misty Rowe is a bodacious bleached blonde who showed off her ample curves as Marilyn Monroe in 1975’s Goodbye Norma Jean, before showing up naked again in National Lampoon’s Class Reunion in 1982. She ended her acting career playing Monroe yet again in 1989 withGoodnight Sweet Marilyn. She may not have looked exactly like the late sex symbol, but she was close enough for Hollywood. Now sing along, to the tune of Candle in the Wind. “Goodbye Misty Rowe, though we hardly knew your cans at all, you had the grace to hold them up, while those around you sagged . . .”
