The Last Machine

Review

Hosted by former Monty Python’s Flying Circus player Terry GilliamThe Last Machine is a five episode BBC documentary series focusing on the birth of cinema, from the turn of the century to 1913, with special emphasis on such early motion picture pioneers as Lumiere and Edison. Gilliam, a brilliant director in his own right, was a perfect choice to take viewers on a tour of the earliest days of filmmaking, when the technology was so new it was nearly magical. Speaking of magical, cast member Fiona Shaw gives us a quick peek at her delicious lumpy charms as Isabel Arundell in 1990’s Mountains of the Moon, which chronicled the adventures of a pair of British explorers in Africa who sought to discover the source of the Nile River. (Coincidentally, one of them got to take a swim up Isabel’s love canal). More recently, she has appeared in the Harry Potter series of films as Harry’s bitchy Aunt Petunia.
