Myopic moralists who claim that no good can come from indulging in recreational puffs of the weedy herb known as marijuana have obviously never taken a few tokes and then giggled uncontrollably throughout Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005). “Wacky,” “irreverent,” “highly inventive,” and “delightfully disjointed” combine to form an apt description of the typical THC-inflected conversation. Put that summation on acid, and the gist of Reefer Madness will begin to come clear. This hip and tongue-in-cheek spoof of the much-mocked anti-pot propaganda film of the same title from 1936 is fun and frolicsome, but its underlying message warns of a clear and serious danger: The war on drugs is too often a war on culture.
