Based on a 1980 self-help memoir by Dan Millman, Peaceful Warrior (2006) recounts Dan's days as a cocky college gymnast in danger of losing his way. Then along comes Socrates—otherwise known as Nick Nolte—a mystical man from platitude town, ready with Zen wisdom and inner strength up the yinyang. Nick is a gas-station attendant, and he's hooked up to the big pump at the center of the universe—he guides Dan (Scott Mechlowicz) away from his girl-getting, churlish ways toward the kind of enlightenment you can only get from a bearded blue-collar Buddha. Scott begins a pilgrimage that entails out-of-body experiences and showdowns with his ego. Amy Smart, bless her heart, shows up as the hotstuff who catches Scott's eye, but in the end Peaceful Warrior is about the soul, not the hole.
