Review

Five young Australian women are brought together on a reality television series to try and make in the music business as a pop group at the top of the 21st century. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s basically what happened to the show’s creator, Belinda Chapple, who was one of the members of the manufactured pop group Bardot in the series Pop Stars in 2000. There’s a disclaimer at the beginning saying Paper Dolls is a fictional story but we can only imagine it’s inspired by her real life experience. At the center of this series is Izzy (Emalia), who seems to have already blown her chance at stardom and is now working at a pizza place. She eventually muscles her way into a second chance and gets a spot on the show Pop Rush when one of the already chosen members of the girl group Harlow gets busted for stealing. There’s an episode focusing on each one of the singers, lifting the curtain on all their personal issues as they strive for fame. Although the show doesn’t shy away from dressing the pop princesses in turn-of-the-century skimpiness, they do stay dressed, although Courney Clarke’s Jade has a super secret lesbian relationship with Gemma Bird Matheson. When it comes to sexiness, these dolls deliver!
