China is a huge and infinitely populous country, and all those people need to be entertained. Unfortunate for us Stateside, it seems as though the Chinese are on the other side of the globe. We rarely benefit from the thriving film industry that produces a plethora of movies every year for the massive home audience. Which is the sad explanation for why so few Americans have become enchanted with the magical celluloid presence that is Gong Li. An exquisitely slender vision, equally sensual and angelic, Gong Li captured the hearts of one of the world’s biggest nations with her first film appearance in Red Sorghum (1987), and she has retained their affections through more than two dozen films, even without shucking shirt nor skirt. That might change soon enough, however--rumors are swirling that Ms. Li may appear in the buff in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Miami Vice. Sounds Miami nice!
