What could be cuddlier than an unmarried radio-personality psychologist whose primary competitor is his unmarried psychologist brother and whose conscience and common sense are both embodied by a working-class father who is a permanent houseguest in the celebrity shrink’s glamorous high-rise digs? The titular sensitively alpha hero of Frasier first entered America’s living rooms through his near constant presence in a popular neighborhood bar. Although alcoholic excess appears to have been at most a guest-starring problem for the quick-witted, warmly acerbic, charmingly self-involved Frasier, the intricacies and absurdities of sibling rivalry and of romantic disentanglement created a goldmine of comic conflicts and joyfully learned lessons in morality.
