In 1950s Hollywood in Fellower Traveller (1989), screenwriter Asa Kaufman (Ron Silver) sees red after having to testify about his Communist associations before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Banned and blacklisted, he flees the scary scene, moving to merry old England to write TV programs for tots. Meanwhile back in the States, his matinee-idol friend Clifford commits suicide. Sure that his buddy bit the big one due to the latest political dishing of democracy, Asa tries to make sense of his death and the USA’s unexpectedly dark underpinnings. When he soon sees that the workings of British television are equally warped with childish games meant to conquer their own rash of red fever, Asa stops kidding himself about the world and gets serious about his past Stalinism.
