Salesmen are a breed apart, viewing the mass of humanity as prey upon which to suck out financial sustenance by using whatever their driven and twisted minds can muster. Then again, there is a tad bit of salesman in all of us, hunkered down in our murky recesses of conscience, but slithering out to flex the powers of persuasion whenever we encounter a person who is reluctant to give us what we want. With Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise (2001), Manchester-born director Danny Boyle--who raised cineastes expectations of classics to come with his Shallow Grave (1994) and Trainspotting (1996)--has created a worthy companion piece to the great sales films of all time. Like Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) with hilarity, like Death of a Salesman (1951) with belly laughs, like Boiler Room (2000) with raucous, knee-slapping mirth, once Boyle’s vacuum-cleaner salesmen wedge a foot in the door, resistance is futile.
