Review

Acclaimed Oscar winning Italian director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, The Young PopeYouth) created his most personal film with the Netflix original The Hand of God (2021). Set in the 80s, the film follows Sorrentino surrogate Fabietto (Filippo Scotti), a teenage dreamer who lives a quiet life at home with his parents and very few friends. He dreams of going away to college and studying philosophy, but doesn't know if he'll ever be able to actually take the plunge and get out of his small village in Naples. In what is oddly the second major pop culture reference to the international football (soccer) star Diego Maradona, part of Fabietto's plot centers around Maradona being traded to Fabietto's favorite team. This film's title comes from a famous goal Maradona was a part of at the 1986 World Cup, which is central to the third act of this film. Along the way, Fabietto must also deal with his brother Marchino (Marlon Joubert) who dreams of being an actor, his manic depressive Aunt Patrizia (Luisa Ranieri) who is brazen and open with her sexual desires, and of course his well intentioned but mostly clueless parents Saverio (Toni Servillo) and Maria (Teresa Saponangelo). As mentioned earlier, Luisa Ranieri's Aunt Patrizia is sexually liberated and bares phenomenal frontal while sunbathing on the deck of a boat! Throw in some sexy bikini action from Viviana Cangiano as well as a perky pair of pokies from Sofya Gershevich as she performs on stage and you might find the hand of god heading down your pants!
