Every once in a while, a mainstream movie causes a stir when the Motion Picture Association of America decides the film is so shockingly sexual that an R rating just doesn’t cut it. That’s when the MPAA breaks out the highly-stigmatized NC-17 rating, added as a step below X in 1990, so that X could be reserved strictly for porn - but still considered almost just as dirty and forbidden.

Getting an NC-17 movie into a theater used to be an almost impossible task. But with the advent of streaming and media becoming more readily available, the NC-17 film is less of a hidden gem nowadays. This erotic Japanese arthouse film from 1976 contains three very real sex scenes along with lots of additional boobs, butt, and bush from star Eiko Matsuda. But its place as one of the most controversial films of all time hasn’t kept it out of the Criterion Collection, so a restored high-definition version is available there to stream!

The 1992 Harvey Keitel crime thriller is steeped with violence, nudity, drug use, and all manner of corrupt behavior so the NC-17 rating wasn’t a surprise. Based on a graphic novel, this 2013 coming-of-age film takes graphic to a whole other level thanks to its lengthy lesbian sex scenes with stars Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos. You balls definitely won’t be blue if you head to its many streaming locations such as Mubi or AMC+!

It’s the second film on this list featuring the fetching Gina Gershon, but it also has Ted Lasso standout Juno Temple baring all three Bs. With both ladies going nude enough to warrant the NC-17 rating, its definitely worth a watch for those lucky enough to have Amazon Prime Video!

Netflix’s notorious NC-17 not-so-biopic about Marilyn Monroe from 2022 has star Ana de Armas basically spending the whole film in the buff. That’s one way to reduce your costume budget! There’s a reason they call them blonde bombshells - they are sure to make you explode!

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!

This Pedro Almodavar dark dramedy actually earned an X rating at first but it was eventually lowered to NC-17. The title is kind of a dead giveway. Before there was Fifty Shades, folks had this BDSM-esque tale to satisfy them, although the most memorable scene actually involves a bathtub and a very intrepid scuba diver, which Max subscribers can now drink in for themselves!

Last Tango in Paris

Another 70s film slapped with the dreaded X at first, this Bertolucci joint is one of the mkst risqué films of the decade, and that’s really saying something. Hindsight has not been the kindest to it for good reason, but it’s still filled to the brim with great nudity from star Maria Schneider that can actually be seen free on Pluto (with ads) for the next eighteen days!
