A documentary about the life and career of supermodel Donyale Luna, who broke barriers as the first black woman to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar (as an illustration) in 1965 and subsequently the first black woman to be photographed for the cover of an issue of British Vogue in 1966, before tragically dying at the young age of 33. It dives into her story with a look at her difficult childhood growing up in Detroit, her rise to international fame despite experiences of racism throughout her career, and her eventual fall due to drugs and mental health issues. Luckily it doesn’t skip over her most salacious work, including full frontal pics as well as her final screen appearance in the 1972 Italian film Salome. Donyale plays the titular biblical babe and bares her titulars for the camera in this psychedelic flick. It’s more than obvious why the filmmakers wanted audiences to learn about Ms. Luna’s lusty legacy!
