Born to Nigerian parents in the Stockwell district of South London, this blockbuster talent was originally set to study music psychology at the University of East London until she was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, changing the course of her life forever. Her first big stage role came in 2011 when she appeared in a production of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, but she became a breakthrough name in musical theatre with two roles that coincidentally were both originated on screen by Whoopi Goldberg - Sister Mary Clarence / Deloris Van Cartier, who she portrayed in the UK tour of Sister Act, and Celie Harris in the 2013 revival of The Color Purple. The latter marked her Broadway debut and won her the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical in 2016, so of course, it wasn’t long before Hollywood came calling. Cynthia had already popped up in a few UK television programs such as Chewing Gum and Mr. Selfridge when she debuted on the silver screen in 2018 with the feature films Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. It was only a year later that she earned an Oscar nomination for playing Harriet Tubman in the dramatic biopic Harriet (and one for film’s song “Stand Up”). Cynthia was officially a hot commodity - emphasis on the hot - but we had to wait until the 2023 drama Drift for her to make our dreams come true and ditch those clothes. In it, Cynthia plays Jacqueline, a Liberian refugee in Greece who befriends an American tour guide (Alia Shawkat), and gives us our first looks at her musical mams during two tantalizing topless scenes. Cynthia’s about to take on her biggest role yet, playing Elphaba in the two-part adaptation of Wicked opposite Ariana Grande, so this could be just the beginning of seeing this Broadway babe bare!
