This is a strangely released series. The first three episodes aired in 1997, the next three in 1998, the next two in 1999, and then a final two-hour episode aired in 2000. I guess you can say it ran for four seasons, huh? An Unsuitable Job For A Woman featured Helen Baxendale as Cordelia Grey, a reluctant owner of a rundown investigation agency. He old boss committed suicide, so now she gets to run the show, all the while being watched over by her conservative yet remarkably intelligent office assistant (Annette Crosbie). Being as the lead character in this show was somewhat quiet and internal of thought, it could easily have descended into boring territory, but Baxendale and her director managed to follow just the right tempo to keep things relaxed, yet suspenseful enough to maintain viewer interest. A classic British detective series, yet there’s barely enough episodes out there to keep viewers happy. As for the inevitable question, who is Helen Baxendale – think of her as Ross’ British girlfriend Emily and you’ll understand. Or see the BBC mini-drama The Investigator to see her go all lesbo.
