The Fabelmans (2022)

2022 was the year a lot of filmmakers looked back to their childhoods and none more prominently than Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote his first screenplay in over two decades to bring us The Fabelmans (2022). The film opens with Spielberg's surrogate, five year old Sammy Fabelman, going with his mom Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and dad Burt (Paul Dano) to see his very first movie, The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). Captured by the moving images, Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle) eventually gets his own film camera and begins making his own movies into his teen years, filming his own movies and eventually rolling the camera as his parents' marriage dissolves right before his own eyes. This is the Steven Spielberg origin story you didn't know you needed, hedging relatively closely to the real events of his life, including a barnstormer cameo in the film's final scene! Michelle Williams picked up her fifth Oscar nomination for her performance here and in the film's sexiest scene, she dances in a sheer nightgown with nothing on underneath, and though it's hard to really make out anything, it's undeniably one of the sexiest scenes in Spielberg's entire cv!
