Despite two spectacular roles, Sydney Penny somehow ended up as a soap-opera veteran. Still, she’s kept showing up like . . . well, a very good Penny. She’s certainly bright and shiny in near-nude romps such as Hearts Adrift (1996) and In the Eye of the Snake (1994). Sydney was singled out for stardom, however, after her showcase role in the phenomenally popular 1983 mini-series The Thorn Birds. That led to a featured role in Clint Eastwood’s Pale Rider (1985). And don’t forget her starring role as the nymphette niece of the titular character on the 1986 TV series The New Gidget. Anyway, Sydney’s now best known for turning into a mature beauty on All My Children and The Bold and the Beautiful. At least Bernadette (1988) made her a star in France, while the 2001 syndicated series Largo Winch gave Sydney a chance to flaunt her M. appeal as a tough femme bodyguard.
