Agora Becomes Spain's Top Earner for 2009

We always eagerly anticipate movies featuring the lovely and elegant Rachel Weisz, in no small part because a movie featuring Rachel Weisz is likely to also feature Rachel Weisz nudity. Next up in the queue for Rach is the historical epic Agora, which showcases Rachel's butt and left breast.

Agora, in which Weisz plays Greek astronomer, philosopher, and mathematician Hypatia of Alexandria, opened this weekend in Spain to booming box office, nearly knocking the country's top earner of all time out of the #1 spot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Alejandro Amenabar's Egyptian epic "Agora" became this year's top-grossing local film after only four days and snagged the top spot for 2009's best opening weekend at the Spanish boxoffice.

Released by Fox on Friday, "Agora" earned ?7 million ($10.4 million) in the first four days, thanks largely to a strong weekend that raked in ?5.4 million ($8 million) with some 7 million tickets sold.

The film's strong opening leaves it shy of hitting the all-time high for a Spanish film's opening. Four years ago, Santiago Segura's "Torrente 3: El Protector" earned ?7.2 million ($10.7 million) in the first three days.

The film's runaway success is being attributed to an aggressive marketing campaign, part of which included Rachel herself talking up her nude scenes! Back in May when the film debuted at Cannes, Rachel was asked if she used a body double for the barings, to which she responded:

Absolutely not. It was all me, never even thought of using a double.

Agora currently has no U.S. release date set, but hopefully Rachel Weisz's dedication to truth in movie making (and booty shaking) will help the film rake in the bucks Stateside as well. But until then, check out a preview pic from the movie right here on MrSkin.com.
