Albert!

Review

Also known as Dear Mother… Love Albert, this often forgotten 1972 UK comedy series starred Rodney Bewes as Albert Courtney, a man leaving his home town in the North of England to go to work in London. I guess in its day, moving to London was a major deal, akin to moving to India for a small town boy. Over the course of the three season run of the show, Albert writes letters home to mother in which he usually exaggerated his day-to-day activities to make it sound like he was doing far better than he actually was in his new life. Eventually, Albert found work with a confectionery company, moved into an apartment with "a couple of dolly birds" and became engaged to Doreen (Liz Gebhardt) – all events that would inspire yawns out of most audiences today. But in its time, Albert! was fun stuff. From a skin perspective, the series featured Sheila White, who’d become famous for going stark naked in an episode of I Claudius in 1975. Oh, the horror! Public nudity?!!?
