It feels like there are so many lesbian films being made today, but they all weirdly involve petticoats and forbidden love. What about a contemporary lesbian story? Because it IS Throwback Thursday, I thought we'd throw it back to the 90s to look at what contemporary lesbian films looked like at that time. Wow, it turns out that you don't need corsets and several layers of clothing to be a lesbian in the cinema!
Oh, the best part? Most of these movies were made by real gay women and even star real gay women - not all, but most. How exciting is that? Here are five hot 90s lesbo films that you should watch:
5. But I'm a Cheerleader
This campy classic starred a young and innocent Natasha Lyonne as a cheerleading carpet eater whose parents send her to a conversion camp. While she is there, she meets a young woman that she falls for. If anything, this place only made Natasha's character even gayer! This is a delightful movie that even shows the two babes playing tonsil hockey.
4. The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love
Laurel Holloman and Nicole Ari Parker have sex for the first time in this very touching teen comedy about girls in love. Laurel plays a tough chick who lives with her lesbian aunt and other women who love women. She sweeps rich, sheltered girl Nicole Ari Parker off her feet and the two have a lovely romance.
The director dedicates the movie to her first girlfriend at the end of the movie, so it does feel like these adventures may actually be incredibly true. That's hot!
3. The Watermelon Woman
This movie makes me miss video stores because director, writer, and lead actress Cheryl Dunye plays a woman who works at a video store. She meets Guinevere Turner there and they begin a sexy romance that even has a hot sex scene in it. Cheryl is trying to find information on an unknown Black actress in silent cinema which is the main plot of the film, but she spends a lot of the movie eating up Guinevere's fruits.
2. High Art
Director Lisa Cholodenko showed off Ally Sheedy in a lesbian love triangle in this 1998 film. She played a photographer who is addicted to drugs and having sex with women. She starts sleeping with her upstairs neighbor, played by Radha Mitchell...but she already has a lover, Patricia Clarkson.
The lead actresses in this movie are not openly gay, but director Lisa Cholodenko is! She later went on to director other sapphically centric films like The Kids Are All Right.
1. Bound
Lana and Lily Wachowski directed this pre-Matrix sex thriller that starred Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon as two babes who sneak off to make love and are trying to sneak off with a lot of money. They come up with a scheme to steal millions of mob dollars and frame one of the lady's boyfriends for the crime.
This is an exciting film that feels A LOT different from the Wachowskis' future works which are steeped in sci-fi. Jennifer and Gina keep it real with their sexy scenes. You're BOUND to find this film hot.
