In the shrewd French drama 25 degrés en hiver (2004), director Stéphane Vuillet gets some unexpectedly comic mileage out of the immigration situation in contemporary France. Carmen Maura, a regular leading lady in the films of Pedro Almodóvar, stars as Abuelita, a feisty mother who offers assistance to an illegal immigrant from the Ukraine (Ingeborga Dapkunaite). The dire situation is made amusing when the charismatic women bumble through a series of near misses with the authorities. Blonde Lithuanian beauty Dapkunaite also has some most fortunate near misses with her wardrobe, treating Vuillet’s viewers to an ample bounty of skin.
