The lovely Lil Dagover was a German silent star who had a long theater and film career in early German cinema which includes a sexy topless scene that we're thrilled to have. Let's throw it back this Throwback Thursday to Lil Dagover's toplessness in the movie Between Two Worlds.
A little bit about Lil: if you're a film nerd, you probably recognize her. She's best known for her role in the famous German expressionist masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Her wide brown eyes and thin lips were brought to the world in that horror classic.
Lil was born in modern-day Indonesia in 1887 (the DutchEast Indies) and became an actress after marrying actor Fritz Dagover who she became far more successful than. She was born Marie Antonia SiegelindeMartha Seubert, but Lil is a lot easier to say. She got her start in the film Harakiri in 1919 and it wasn't long before she had international stardom. In 1921's Between Two Worlds she made her nude debut by showing both breasts in this windy scene!
During the Third Reich, Lil stayed out of politics and acted in musicals and comedies which earned her a few State awards. She was a beloved actress at that time, but due to her apolitical work, she was able to maintain her career after the war. She even found a place in television in the 1970s. She was one of the few, rare actresses to survive the silent transition to talkies and even make a career on television. She did it all! Although she didn't really go nude again.She died in 1980 in Munich and sadly, as is the case with many silent films, not a lot of her work has survived.
