The other week I did a Hippie Hotties segment on one of the Carry On movies which lead me down the road of researching other 1970s British sex comedies. The Brits are hilarious which everyone knows. They gave the world Monty Python, The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, and my personal new favorite Stath Lets Flats. I love British comedy and British sex comedy is no sexception.
What I love about the Brits' take on sex and seduction is that it seems so antithetical to their culture. They are a people who pride themselves on having good manners and maintaining a stiff upper lip no matter what the circumstance, so a naked woman makes that lip quiver with lust! Most British sex comedies provide humor from the clash that comes from British society meeting bare-naked sensuality. It's honestly a riot!
For Throwback Thursday, let's go to the height of the British sex comedy: the 1970s! Take a look at these four sex comedies that turned us all on:
Carry On Behind
The Brits love buns, so Carry On Behind shows us some British behinds. In this hilarious addition to the Carry On franchise, misunderstandings and innuendos carry us through a story about two archeologists who go to look at artifacts and it turns out that the artifacts are gorgeous women.
The lads watch a titty show which is where we see Jenny Cox take it off, but there's a particularly funny scene in which Helli Louise is caught with her buns on display in the shower. And let's not forget about the darling Deutch dame, Elke Sommer who gets cheeky.
Frustrated Wives
This 1977 film from director Arnold Miller may be as close to smut as the Brits got at this time. Two housewives are super bored with their lives. Their hubbies go to a sex clinic instead of helping their wives get off. This leaves the girls to do it for themselves...and they really do. While the women are stuck at home discovering themselves, their husbands are discovering other women's bodies. There is so much nudity in this movie!
Some of the beautiful babes who show their breasts include Susan Glanville, Hilary Farr, and Sui Lin who plays a masseuse that definitely gives happy endings. She certainly gave Gillian Brown a happy ending when she massaged her breasts!
This film stands out amongst the others on the list for being much more raunchy and closer to sexploitation than any of the others. But how could I resist not including it? There are just so many skintastic actresses to admire!
Think Dirty
Are you thinking dirty thoughts yet? You will be after you check out 1970's comedy classic Think Dirty staring the big-eyed Marty Feldman as a marketing man who has to come up with ideas to sell a frozen porridge. Huh? I don't know exactly, but maybe this is what they mean about British food tasting bland. Marty comes up with a good idea: sex sells! He uses sexy models like Julie Ege in the flesh to sell this porridge. Who's hungry for more Julie?
The Ruling Class
This 1972 film by director Peter Medak is not nearly as bawdy as the other films, but it is a classic comedy about British manners - that thing that the Brits love so much! This movie tells the story of an aristocrat played by Peter O'Toole who inherits his father's estate after a bizarre and sudden death. O'Toole takes over as the 14th Early of Gurney (I don't really know what these words mean)m but all of this power has gone to his head...he now thinks he is Jesus Christ.
You read that right. He has a momentary break from feeling absolutely bonkers when Carolyn Seymour strips down to her undies. She shows her breasts and she has us wanting to Seymour of her nude body.
