A forgotten flick from a legendary director, a 3D threequel, a stone cold action/sci-fi classic, an acclaimed war film, and a mostly forgotten romance are coming your way on November 4 in Movie Nudity History!
2016: Dog Eat Dog
Although legendary screenwriter and directorPaul Schraderhad a substantial career comeback thanks to his 2018 film First Reformed, a lot of fans will tell you that his comeback to respectability started with this flick, released on this day four years ago. Wild at Heart co-stars Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe star as friends and former criminals who, along with a third pal of theirs, take on a seriously dangerous job offered to them by some mobsters in Cleveland. They will kidnap the newborn baby of a rival gangster and then split the ransom he's certain to pay between the three of them.
Of course, because this is a Paul Schrader movie, you can imagine how wrong everything goes as these three crooks trying to pull one last score before going straight lose the thread. The film's only nudity comes to us courtesy of Chelsea Mee, who plays a stripper that Cage wants to interrogate, and we can see her breasts beneath all that bedazzlement!
2011: A Very Harold Kumar 3D Christmas
On this day nine years ago, this stoner comedy trilogy came to a close with the franchise's first and only foray into 3D! While not as skin-filled as Harold Kumar Go to White Castle or Harold Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, this flick certainly does have its charms, even outside the confines of 3D! Like a great many comedies in the new millennium, this one weaponizes male nudity for laughs when John Cho's Harold gets his (prosthetic) penis stuck to a flagpole like the classic A Christmas Story scene!
All is not lost for us fans of female nudity, however, as both Cassie KellerChernise Yvette play topless angels who hang out with Jesus (Jake Johnson) and Neil Patrick Harris, once again playing a hyper-masculine and macho version of himself...
2005: Jarhead
Fifteen years ago today we got this underrated film about the first Iraq War and the mental toll it took on the soldiers trained to fight in a war that basically ended before it began. While the film was acclaimed in its day and made close to $100 million at the box office,its popularity has exploded in the last few years as a franchise was built around the film starting in 2014 that has spawned three direct-to-video sequels with a fourth on the way.
Jake Gyllenhaal stars asAnthony Swofford, who wrote the book on which the film is based, a Marine who follows his Vietnam Vet father into service mostly due to a lack of ambition to do anything else on his part.7 minutes in we get a flashback to Swoff banging his girlfriend, played by Brianne Davis, and we get a quick flash of her breasts as she pulls on a shirt after sex...
When Swoff and his fellow Marines are sent to Kuwait to await further instructions, they pass the time by watching Apocalypse Now over and over again, getting geared up for a war that they don't yet know is never coming. 50 minutes into the flick, one of his fellow soldiers gets a video tape in the mail that he puts on the communal TV for everyone to watch. He flips out when he realizes it's his wife (Becky Boxer) getting banged by his neighbor and though his fellow soldiers feel bad for him in the moment, this chance to see a naked woman is one they don't want to pass up, so they continue watching long after he leaves the room. Dark stuff...
1988: John Carpenter's They Live
With the immortal line"I have come here to chewbubblegumand kick ass...and I'm all out ofbubblegum," a hero was born! The late, great former professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper exploded onto screens in 1988 in two flicks: the mostly forgotten Hell Comes to Frogtown, which is awesome and worth checking out if you've never seen, and this effort from legendary director John Carpenter! Piper plays the awesomely named John Nada, adrifterwho comes into the possession of a pair of sunglasses that, when worn, expose that an entire race of aliens have infiltrated American society. With the help of fellow drifter/construction worker Frank (Keith David), Nada must now take down the alien scum and expose to the American people the nightmare they've unconsciously been living through!
The film was originally set to be released in late October, but was pushed back to this day 32 years ago to avoid competing with the non-Carpenter directed sequel Halloween 4. Like virtually all of Carpenter's films in the 80s, They Livewas a modest success in its day but has only garnered a better reputation over the years. The film's message of one man standing up to the tyranny of the ruling class is somehow more relevant now than in the go-go late 80s when everyone loved the government, and it's just fantastic to see Piper in his prime, kicking ass and yes, chewing lots of bubblegum!
The film's only nude scene comes just before the end of the film when the sensationally stacked Cibby Danyla bares her big breasts while banging a dude who is revealed to be one of the film's villainous aliens!
1977: First Love
Finally, on this day 42 years ago came this romantic tale based on the 1957 short story "Sentimental Education" by Harold Brodkey.FutureGreatest American Hero starWilliam Katt plays a college student named Elgin, who gets the surprise of a lifetime when a foxy older woman (Beverly D'Angelo) begins making amorous advances his way. Hell, she flat out throws herself at him...
The first time around, however, he rejects her because he's only got eyes for fellow student Caroline (Susan Dey). He spends the rest of the film trying to make up his mind which of these two stone cold foxes he wants to end up with but, spoiler alert for a 42 year old movie, he ends up all alone in the end! Hey, at least we got Susan Dey's nude debut in the bargain, a mere three years after she finished playing Laurie Partridge on the boob tube...
