Red-hot Russian Lena Katina was the first girl chosen by producer Ivan Shapovalov in 1999 to be one half of the Moscow musical duo t.A.T.u., Russia’s most successful pop music act. Released in 2002, their first single “All The Things She Said” peaked at number one in 19 countries, including UK, Russia, and Australia, and had one helluva video to go with it. Along with her partner, Julia Volkova, Lena appeared in the controversial short wearing Catholic schoolgirl uniforms and engaging in some heavy lesbian make-out sessions. Later the girls revealed that, in reality, they were neither lesbians nor lovers, but did advocate “love without boundaries.” The duo also spurned two other hits, “Not Gonna Get Us” off their debut album 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane, and “All About Us” from their second album, Lyudi Invalidly, or Disabled People. If you think you recall seeing t.A.T.u. perform somewhere, you’re probably thinking of their 2003 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. In 2009, Lena began a solo career, and in 2011, her single “Never Forget” reached number one on the MTV Russia Top 10, won MTV Russia 2011 Video of the Year, and hit number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. That same year, she appeared with her t.A.T.u. partner Julia and The O.C. actress Mischa Barton in the film You and I (2011), the story of two teenage girls who meet and fall in love at a t.A.T.u. concert. Lena shares her lovelies in the film, lying fully naked on bed with pink pokies pointing skyward.
