Bombay Begums (2021)

No Nudity

Review

Indian society often makes it difficult for women to break out of their traditional roles as subservient to men, but the series Bombay Begums portrays the stories of five women attempting to do just that: challenge the way their society thinks of women. The series debuted on Netflix in March 2021 and follows five women across different generations and social classes, all of whom are united by their undying desire one day have a society which isn't completely absent of their own desires. Rani (Pooja Bhatt) is the CEO of a prestigious bank, who will do just about anything to protect what she's created. Fatima (Shahana Goswami) is an ambitious employee of said bank, steadily making her way up the corporate ladder. Ayesha (Plabita Borthakur) is your proverbial small-town girl trying to make her way in the bright lights and big city of Bombay, harboring a secret about her sexuality that her small town family wouldn't understand. Shai (Aadhya Anand) is an isolated and angsty teen dealing with some world class mother issues, and Lily (Amruta Subhash) is a single mother making ends meet by dancing at a bar. With all of the restrictions on sex and nudity in Indian film and television productions, it's not too surprising to learn that there's no nudity on the show! However, Plabita Borthakur has two steamy sapphic make out sessions with the gorgeous Sanghmitra Hitaishi in episodes two and three! That's some fairly progressive stuff, so there's reason to hold out hope that if Bombay Begums comes back for a second season, things might progress enough to get skinsational!
