Family Ties star Justine Bateman makes her feature film writing and directing debut with Violet (2021). Olivia Munn stars as the titular production executive living in Hollywood who seems, on the surface anyway, to have it all: a hunky roommate (Luke Bracey) who seems to always be there with a sympathetic ear, a gorgeous house in the Hollywood Hills, and a job in the entertainment industry that very few women ever get to fill. However, inside her head is a constant and nagging voice (Justin Theroux) which belittles her and tells her that she's not only not good enough, she'll never be good enough. Combatting this voice, the film also visualizes her positive thoughts that combat the negative voices by a series of lines written in white script appearing on the screen, externalizing her dueling inner thoughts. As Violet goes through her daily life, the audience is witness to these raging conflicts within in her, flashing back to her childhood in Michigan or cutting randomly to a boxer getting his clock cleaned in the ring. Violet is a woman at war with herself and the film seems to want us to understand how much can be going on in the minds of people who seem to have it all figured out. While we were all hoping that this might feature Olivia Munn's triumphant return to nudity—it's been nearly a decade since Magic Mike—alas it wasn't meant to be! She still looks dead sexy, it's Olivia Munn after all, but there's no nudity to be found here. This Violet, much like your balls, is blue!
