Review

There are plenty of forgotten indie teen sex comedies from the 1980s that deserve to be forgotten. The Wild Life (1984), however, is definitely not one of them. Just two years after Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Cameron Crowe scripted this A-lister filled, loony tale of lost youth, with the emphasis on nice guy Bill Conrad (Eric Stoltz) finally getting a place of his own. Bill works at a bowling alley in the suburbs of LA, but he sure dropped the ball by dumping his high school girlfriend Anita (Lea Thompson). Now she's boning a cop (Hart Bochner) who visits her donut shop all the time, while Bill's little brother (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) is obsessed with war and fighting and likes to hang out with dudes who went to Nam, including a heroin addicted Randy Quaid. Bill's bestie is the loud and obnoxious blonde ex-wrestler Tommy (Chris Penn) who's fighting to keep his girlfriend (Jenny Wright) from leaving him for her nerdy New Wave loving boss at the mall (Rick Moranis). From a disastrous attempt at letting Tommy live with him, to giving Tommy a strip club bachelor party before he even asks Eileen to marry him, there's all sorts of wild stuff going on in this one that shows viewers what it's like to try to transition from student to adult. Deemed by many, including Ben Stein, as being an unofficial Fast Times sequel, the nudity in this one never hit the legendary levels of Phoebe Cates' poolside cans display. That might not have been the case had the film not cut a Lea Thompson nude scene, though. Curses to whoever left her tits out of the final edits, since all we get in the final cut is her in a white bra and panties. More like the mild life. However, the teen audience pines for Tracy Hutchinson as a lovable loser at strip poker we get to see topless, while also marveling at the busty stripper Francesca “Kitten” Natividad and the titty and kitty baring boner-inducer Ashley St. Jon while they made Tommy's bachelor party a mamorable one. Oh, and don’t forget Jenny Wright as a lucky, large breasted find when Penn goes all peeping Tommy. One of the few films of Cam Crowe most movie fans don't know, with all those mams it's wild that people don't love The Wild Life!
