Review

The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954)—not to be confused with Best Picture winner The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)—is one of those classic star-studded war pictures that your dad loves to spend the afternoon watching. Much like Samuel L. Jackson had his "snake" period where he starred in Snakes on a Plane (2006) and Black Snake Moan (2006), William Holden too had his "Bridge" period where he starred in both films mentioned in the first sentence. Here, Holden stars as a celebrated WWII vet and Navy Lieutenant who is called back into service as a fighter pilot at the onset of the Korean War. He brings his wife Nancy (Grace Kelly) and daughter along with him to Japan, where he'll be stationed for the duration of the conflict, giving him a much needed distraction when he's not flying missions. However, during what is supposed to be a weekend of shore leave, he is called back into action to bomb the titular bridges in a maneuver that many of his fellow soldiers agree is a suicide mission. Co-starring such Hollywood luminaries as two-time Academy Award winner Frederic March and former biggest star in the world Mickey Rooney, this epic romance finds just as much joy in Holden's love for his wife as it does in his love for his country. Speaking of Grace Kelly, the princess-to-be obviously doesn't get nude in this flick made during the height of the Hays Code, but she does show some tasteful mom cleavage in a bathing suit! More like The Bridges of Stroke-o-Ri, amirite?
