Review

The Anniversary (1968) is a black comedy from the heyday of the genre and features one of the most scenery-chewing bits of acting in the long career of Bette Davis. She plays the eye-patch-wearing ball-buster of a mother who gathers her sons together every year to celebrate the death of the husband she hated. What's more, she has dirt on her sons’ sexual dalliances, whether straight, gay, or somewhere in-between, and threatens to blackmail them. It's not clear what she has on Elaine Taylor, the pretty blonde English tease, but it's clear that Elaine has a body that could ring Big Ben's bells. There's a bedroom scene in which she takes off her clothes down to her undergarments that's the real gift in this anniversary.
