Owen Wilson’s Carl Nargle is a bearded, curly-coifed, and soft spoken painter who’s the popular host of a long-running show on public access television in Vermont. Obviously inspired by real life artist and host, Bob Ross, the film paints a picture of what could’ve been had his world gotten shaken up by the emergence of a newer, younger artist. Station Manager Tony (Stephen Root) sees the station losing money and decides to hire Ambrosia (Ciara Renée) on for a hip new painting show where she makes more than just calming landscapes with mountains and happy little trees. When his ratings begin to suffer, Carl starts to spiral out, re-examining a life full of regrettable choices, like the ending of his romantic relationship with his producer Katherine (Michael Watkins). Katherine’s actually one of the things he and Ambrosia have in common, since it seems the younger painter has the hots for her as well. You’ll be painting your walls watching the charming Ciara plant a big ol’ sapphic smooch on her in a car!
