Blending documentary and newsreel footage from London's Imperial War Museum with narrative scenes, Overlord (1975) tells the tale of a British soldier who is D-Day destined. He's Tom Beddoes, a quiet kiddo who carries a copy of David Copperfield and frets about his Cocker Spaniel. His long lead-up to D-Day is tedious and T&A-free, and director Stuart Cooper portrays it realistically: We see Tom bid his ma and pa goodbye, survive training hazing, make a buddy or two, and become somewhat blue over the likelihood of D-Day leaving him DOA. He meets juicy local Julie Neesam at a dance, and he makes plans to see her again . . . but, alas, he may not get the chance. Blast those Nazis! Separating Tom from his hottie! Julie haunts his fantasies as Normandy draws near, and with good reason: Her beachhead is mighty storm-worthy.
