Review

Dense of mood, thick with symbolism, replete with the well-placed, muff-reflecting mirror, director Robert Altman’s Images (1972) is a challenging fable of identity, oppression and responsibility. Luscious blonde Susannah York stars as an author of children’s books who shuts herself up in a country house to finish her next project. The solitude has a peculiar effect, and soon York is attempting to kill the overbearing men who stifle her life. But some of these men may already be dead. With an amazingly evocative soundtrack and a lush visual atmosphere, Images is a difficult but pleasing excursion along the limits and borders of individuality.
