British director Michael Winterbottom has spent his entire career subverting audience expectations and his rockumentary On the Road (2016) is no exception to that rule. The film shines a spotlight on Brit alt rock band Wolf Alice as they embark on a tour of Great Britain in support of their 2015 debut LP "My Love is Cool." Mixed in amongst the concert footage featuring full performances of a number of their songs are candid backstage interviews with the band, but the film's main conceit involves a pair of "roadies" Estelle (Leah Harvey) and Joe (James McArdle). They're obviously fictional roadies played by two actors, but they give the film its emotional core as they go from mere acquaintances to lovers over the course of the tour. In what is perhaps Winterbottom's biggest bit of subversion, the members of the band and the two roadies, along with pretty much everyone else involved in the tour, all get along really well. One might expect that the backstage drama would provide the film with most of its on screen drama, but it's quite the opposite, with the film showing what a joy it can be to be touring on the road sometimes. In typical Winterbottom fashion, the film also features a number of sex scenes, all of them coming in the film's second hour. Leah Harvey is at the center of all these sex scenes, showing off her breasts in three sex scenes starting at the one hour mark, as well as a brief look at her bare buns when she wears nothing but a t-shirt while standing at a window! Watch On the Road and you'll drop a load!
