If you've ever ridden the subway in New York City, then you know full well the conflict at the heart of the film Materna (2020). It all starts out like any other typical day on a subway car with a crazy white man (Sturgill Simpson) ranting and raving on a variety of subjects to anyone who will listen... and even to those who don't. Among those who don't want to listen are a quartet of women from differing circumstances but who have more in common than it initially seems: Jean (Kate Lyn Sheil), an animator whose mother is constantly telling her that her lifestyle isn't "normal"; Mona (Jade Eshete), an actress whose latest show was cancelled and who is dealing with a religious zealot of a mother; Perizad (Assol Abdullina), a transplant from the Middle East whose family often ignored her to lavish attention on her brother, who recently committed suicide; and Ruth (Lindsay Burdge) an affluent wife and mother trying to escape her verbally abusive husband. Over the course of their subway ride, we get to know these four strangers who will eventually have to come together to push back not only against the crazy guy berating them for being women, but also the greater evil in all of their lives that is holding them back. Though the film features a lot of flashbacks—hence a lot of opportunities for nudity—there's no skin in this game! Kate Lyn Sheil and Assol Abdullina both show off their phenomenal bodies in some sexy underwear, while Jade Eshete shows some side buns while sitting on a toilet, but that's the extent of the sexiness in this otherwise solemn affair!
