El Planeta (2021)

Times are tough for everybody around the world these days, especially in the city of Gijón, Spain for the penniless mother-daughter duo who are used to better times and fuller plates, Leonor (Amalia Ulman) and Maria (Ale Ulman).  We follow these two women, living together in a tiny apartment after the most recent economic crisis in Spain, barely scraping by.  The only problem is, these two are used to living a much more comfortable lifestyle, so when the patriarch of the family dies and they are BROKE-broke, they can't even afford to keep up appearances, even though they try by wearing full length fur-coats and carry Burberry shopping bags in an attempt to "fake it til you make it" with some of local surviving suitors who still have a few Euros in their bank account.  So Maria pinches pennies at home, sleeping in coats to avoid turning on the heat, and Leonor decides to find a suitor or at the least figure out how low she is willing to go with a man for money.  All the while, Leonor is continuously let down by man after horrible man, who keep making false promises that fall through.  So the impoverished mother and daughter team decide to become small-time hustlers around town to see if they can still make it feel like they aren't about to have the electricity shut off while passing the time in their desolate coastal community.  The amazing Argentinean, Amalia Ulman wrote, directed, and stars in this black and white indie and she exudes the sexiness of a silent movie star with her big eyes and even though we only see her bare back for the lone skin scene in this flick, she certainly grabs our attention in El Planeta!
