Let's throw it back today to one of the queens of 1920's and 30's Hollywood: the gorgeous Greta Garbo. #TBT to this skintillating Swedish sexpot best known for her seductive accent and her controversial films.
It seems tame to us now, but Greta wasa trailblazer for skinema. With her husky voice, luminous confidence, and thin figure Greta took on roles that were sizzling with sex despite never getting fully nude. She loved towing the line, flirting with danger by toying with Hollywood censors in pre-code Tinsel Town. Look no further than her nip slip in Grand Hotel for proof!
Twice she played real-life characters like in Mata Hari she played the World War I spy who was known for trading sex for secrets. She had an infamously sexy dance that had her sensually dancing in a bra top around a statue as if trying to seduce it. Her dance certainly put a trance on us!
One of her most importantroles was in Queen Christina a very rare early Hollywood film in which Greta played a bisexual queen who enjoyed wearing men's clothing. That's a lot for 1933! It was also a sugar-coated version of the real story of King Christina Vasa (she took the title King instead of Queen in real life) who had many more lesbian exploits than what the movie allowed. Still, it was 1933 Hollywood. Any hints at girl-on-girl action were taboo. In one scene she kissed her co-star Elizabeth Young and censors at the time chastised the film for making the kiss "too long". In modern times we don't feel that thisgirl-on-girl kiss was long enough!
If Greta was around today she would surely be a megastar, but her sex appeal was clearly ahead of its time. #TBT to the gorgeous Greta!
