Our Staff Picks column takes you back to a time when video stores reigned supreme and the "Staff Picks" section was the place to find out what films were worthy of one's time. Of course, our version of Staff Picks has a decidedly skintillating angle, as we suss out which films from a particular subgenre are the best to find great nudity. This week let's cover one a skinteresting genre: dramedies.
So what IS a dramedy? It's a comedy with a lot of dramatic moments...or a drama with a lot of comedic beats. It's both, basically. It can seem hard to define, but I think that dramedies definitely have a "feel". They tend to feel slower or quirkier. Famous dramedies include The Apartment from way back in 1960 and recent award-winning films like Lady Bird. See? They are kind of funny, kind of serious. Jerry Maguire
This famous romantic-comedy-drama had us all at "hello". Jerry Maguire is a decent example of a mainstream dramedy before they all ended up having that 2000s indie feel. This film has a little bit of everything, including breasts. Tom Cruise enjoys a moment with the topless Kelly Preston who sensually feeds Tom. This scene completes me.
Horse Girl
This underrated Netflix original is a strange one, but it features Alison Brie in a merkin. So how can we complain? Brie plays a "horse girl": a nerdy, shy young woman who likes crafts, horses, and the supernatural. She spends a lot of time lucid dreaming, but her dreams find a way to infect her real-life which gives her a difficult time figuring out what is real and what is not.
This quirky film has a lot of funny, interesting moments. Ultimately, Alison's descent into potential madness is mostly dramatic which gives her a chance to stretch those muscles. I think Brie is an actress who manages to be good at everything - including aesthetics.
Funny Story
If your movie is called "funny story", it had better be funny. Like most dramedies, this film is funny, but it's not necessarily laugh-out-loud funny. It's mostly sweet and tender with its dramatic moments. This 2018 film follows an estranged father-daughter relationship as the pair reunites to spend time together in Big Sur. The daughter invited her father because this will all culminate in her surprise wedding to...a woman that her own father has previously slept with. The pair obviously have no idea. Drama and comedy ensue!
We see great nudity from Aschleigh Jensen who shows off her thick body when she takes a shower. There is drama. There is comedy. There is nudity. What more do we need?
Dolemite is My Name
This Netflix original film stars Eddie Murphy, so you might assume that it is a straight-up comedy. However, this biopic about the life of Rudy Ray Moore aka Dolemite provides surprising dramatic moments. There are also four hot nude scenes in the film, including full frontal from the hot hourglass hottie Toni Duclottni.
Sade E. Moore plays a stripper who has a stunning nude scene in the strip club. She shows off her beautiful body when she strips naked onstage. In fact, she slips off her top and shows us her suck sacks. We would love to see more from Ms. Moore, but this is a great start:
Silver Linings Playbook
This feels like a quintessentially modern dramedy to me. Brea Bee plays Nikki who is naked in the shower, showing her breasts as she gets caught making love to another man in the shower.
That nude scene is not nearly as remembered as the fact that Jennifer Lawrence charmed us all in this film. She played a young (hot) widow who practices a dance routine with Bradley Cooper's character whose life has recently fallen apart. The two are both trying to repair their seriously damaged selves and they do so through dance. That allows us to see Jen's cleavage!
