According to a new article on The AV Club, there are several projects that director Quentin Tarantino considered making that the world may never see. From an R-rated Star Trek to another Kill Bill film, Tarantino has entertained several ideas and pitches. One of the most interesting ones on the list was his interest in remaking Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! originally directed by the iconic sexploitation king Russ Meyer. I would love ANY remake of this film, but a Tarantino remake is skincredibly exciting to me. I can envision it perfectly. Can't you?
The plot of the original film follows three go-go dancers who go on a crime spree through the California desert where things are hot and their naked bodies are hotter. The women hold a girl hostage, but then they meet a man in the desert living with his two sons who is hoarding a large sum of money. Now they want to take the cash! They do it all and they look amazing doing it!
The title came from Russ' belief that a snappy title included speed, sex, and violence. Well, he certainly got that right. Tura Satana, Haji, and Lori Williams became skintastic stars because of this movie which wasn't successful at the box office, but it went on to become a huge cult classic.
Allegedly, Tarantino's casting ideas in the mid-2000s included Eva Mendes, Kim Kardashian, Britney Spears, and porn stars like Tera Patrick. It seems like he was going for a mix of legitimate actresses with hourglass shapes, influencers, porn babes, and pop stars. He was going for everything, but there is a throughline with all of those choices and it is that these ladies are SEXY.
Why would Tarantino take on this classic? He is obviously a huge fan of exploitation flicks of all kinds, so it really shouldn't surprise anyone. He has also mastered the style of 60s and 70s filmmaking. This isn't only a rumor, however. One of the stars of the original film, Tura Satana, told a website called We are Movie Geeks in 2008 that Tarantino was making the film and that she intended to be involved. Sadly, that was about fifteen years ago and we have not heard another word since.
A fun fact about Tura Santana is that she trademarked her image, so during filming and promotion Russ had to ask for her permission to use her image and pay her royalties throughout. It was worth it! This legendary exotic dancer and adult entertainer is an absolute star in the film and I would have loved to see what she would have done in the remake, but she passed away in 2011.
I say, if not Quentin, then someone should. I have no doubt that Quentin Tarantino would do an amazing job making the sexploitation classic come back to life. That being said, The Love Witch director Anna Biller might also be a great choice to remake a Russ Meyer film. Who do you think should try their hand at a remake?
