Melanie was born in New York City in 1957 to an actress and an advertising executive. When her parents separated, she went to Hollywood with her mom which is where she was able to start her career. Her hottest work came in the Brian De Palma erotic thriller Body Double. She did not use a body double - she was totally nude and totally herself! She was 26-years-old in this film and it was considered a bit of a comeback for her after battling addictions to drugs and alcohol in her early 20s. That's the life of a teen star and the child of Hollywood starlets! She cleaned up her act but kept that grittiness about her that people came to know and love.
In Body Double, she sported a sexy bleach-blond hairdo as she danced nude. De Palma's erotic thriller still holds up. A man is holed up in his apartment as he begins spying on a blond neighbor. He witnesses her murder, then he sees a new tenant in that apartment: a blond woman who looks exactly like her. The 1984 film is loosely inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window and Vertigo which is very interesting considering who Melanie's mother is - one of his famous Hitchcock blondes!
