It's Juneteenth, so I wanted to take a moment to celebrate Black actresses who have been recognized by the highest institution in filmmaking for their skincredible contributions. I am talking, of course, about The Oscars.

I should note that only one Black woman has won the Oscar for Best Actress and that history-making moment belongs to Halle Berry for her performance in Monster's Ball. Who could ever forget her breathtaking and breastacular sex scene?

By the time that she won the award, Dorothy Dandridge, Angela Bassett, and Diahann Caroll had all been nominated for their performances. That's a well of talent, but it ultimately took 72 years of Academy Awards for one Black woman to win the award. While that is something to tsk tsk the Oscars about, I do not want to take any praise away from hottie Halle for her amazing work in Monster's Ball.

So, yes, Halle Berry remains the ONLY Best Actress winner. That's a shame, Oscars! There have certainly been worthwhile actresses ever since 2001. Other Black actresses who have been nominated since include Cynthia Erivo, Andra Day, Ruth Negga, and the one and only Viola Davis. All of those women know how to Act with a capital A and they all deliver skintastic performances. Ruth Negga and Andra Day have even gone nude in their Oscar-nominated roles! That is something worth rewarding!

The Best Supporting Actress category has been another story. Ever since Hattie McDaniel was nominated for and won Best Supporting Actress in 1939's Gone with the Wind, she has paved the way for other Black actresses to earn recognition for their work in this category. Many women have won - and many of them have gone nude - but I should note that once again it took nearly 50 years for a woman to win after Hattie's history-making win in 1939. Who was that woman?

It was Whoopi Goldberg for her role in Ghost! Before she won, women like Alfre Woodward, Juanita Moore, and even Oprah Winfrey were all nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Whoopi nearly gave us a nipple flash for Jumpin' Jack Flash. One could say that this is a jumpin' flash of nip worth jacking to!

There was a bit of a dry spell for Black women winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress after Whoopi Goldberg's fabulous win, but all of that went away once Octavia Spencer won for The Help. That win led to a lot of other wonderful wins from deserving actresses!

Now, none of these ladies have actually gone nude, but I do want to shout them out: Jennifer Hudson won for Dreamgirls, Mo'Nique won for Precious in 2009, Viola Davis won for Fences (finally!), and Regina King won for If Beale Street Could Talk. None of them went nude, but Lupita Nyong'o won for 12 Years a Slave which did show some skin.

It is worth noting that a lot of those roles are also difficult-to-watch (like Lupita's nude scene) or feel like Black Oscar bait for the white Academy (hello, The Help). However, I do think and hope that that changes.

I personally found recent Best Actress nominees like Andra Day and Ruth Negga to be refreshing changes to that trope. And again I do not want to take away wins from these powerful and beautiful actresses. Here's to these skintastic beauties who deserve all the awards...and all of the nude scenes!
