Respected British actresses meet lusty lesbianism in director Robert Aldrich’s controversial sleeper The Killing of Sister George (1968). On the surface, it’s a dreary tale about the downfall of a bitchy BBC soap opera actress. It’s also, however, a wild look at lesbian culture in the London of the swinging '60s. Beryl Reid’s bitchy diva is also the lover of luscious Susannah York, who’s being pursued by sexy older woman Coral Browne. The scenes in the lesbian bar are absolutely amazing, while Coral and Susannah break new ground in cinematic booby-sucking.
