Pan de ángel (1984)

Set in contemporary Barcelona, the anti-clerical comedy Pan de ángel (1984) describes the fallout that occurs when the church wriggles its way between father and daughter. Lorenzo Santamaría stars as Agustí Martorell, a leftist lawyer who’s known throughout the local political community for his moral righteousness and atheistic beliefs. When Martorell learns that his beautiful daughter Ester (Eva Cobo) has converted to Catholicism at the prodding of a progressive priest, he puts his political future in jeopardy by fighting openly to change her mind. Director Francesc Bellmunt does an apt job of portraying his heroine’s tug of war between sin and redemption––in one of the film’s most vivid scenes, images of communion are intercut with an alluring Cobo shower.
