Amongst the most interesting cinema to come out of Eastern Europe in the last few years has been a new generation of German, Austrian, Polish, and Czech filmmakers coming to terms with their countries' bleak recent past. Habermann (2010), a co-production of all the countries just mentioned except Poland, is set in 1938 in the area known as Sudetenland, a portion of Northern and Western Czechoslovakia that was predominantly occupied by Germans during the early days of WWII. This portion of the country was annexed by Hitler in late September of that year and the film tells the story of the Czech people living there at the time, whose way of life was inexorably changed by the events of the war. So, you know, not exactly the fun-loving, free-wheeling time you might be after for a night at the movies, but historical stuff is fine when it can weave in a little crowd pleasing fun along the way! This flick doesn't have much in that department either, honestly, it's a movie about a people and their land being taken away from them, what sort of crown pleasing elements were you thinking you were going to encounter? Well, if you've made it this far, might as well tell you that there is indeed some skin in this otherwise dour flick. 12 minutes in, before things get pretty bleak, we get a brief topless sex scene from the phenomenally foxy Franziska Weisz! It's kinda bland missionary sex, but any chance to peep some perfect peepers before things go south is a chance worth taking!
