The script was actually based on the Jane Austin novel Emma, and proved to studio execs that teens in the 90s were willing to head to the movie theaters to catch modern-day adaptations of classic works. This ushered in the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, She's All That, and Cruel Intentions. All 1999 movies. All based on classic works of literature.
