59 years ago today, skintrepreneur Hugh Hefner published the first issue of men's magazine Playboy.

Now his life and career are the stuff of legend, but it all started when he borrowed $1000 from his mother, then worked from his kitchen in Chicago (also home to the glorious Skin Central) to produce the inaugural issue. At the time the cover price was 50, but if you are lucky enough to have a copy of one of these landmark issues nowadays, it’s worth a pretty penny!

The issue featured nude photos of the one and only Marilyn Monroe that he had purchased from a calendar company, and the magazine was completely sold out within weeks.

Since then the magazine has spread plenty of notable playmates, from Jayne Mansfield and Bettie Page to Pamela Anderson and Lindsay Lohan. The magazine may be getting on in years, but the models- to quote Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused- “I get older, they stay the same age.”

Happy Anniversary Playboy!
