The new Netflix series The Watcher is a classic haunted house series that is filled with mystery, thrills, and chills. In 2014, New York Magazine broke the story of a house in Westfield, New Jersey which became known as 'The Watcher House' because of a series of letters that were sent to the new residents from the 'person who watches the house'. And these letters were very, very weird.
The family that moved into the $1.3 million house immediately got the scare of their life. Almost as soon as the family moved into 657 Boulevard, they began receiving creepy letters warning them not to change too much in the house. The strange letters were signed 'The Watcher'. The letters were addressed to "the new owner" and none of them had a return address.
The letters became increasingly scary, filled with details about the house and the family's kids which indicated that whoever was sending the letters was indeed watching the family inside. The writer was happy about the children in the home, claiming the house needed to be filled with "young blood". The Watcher also claimed that 'as soon as I learn their names (the children), I will call them to me'. NO THANKS! THAT IS SCARY! I would out as soon as I read those words, but the couple resisted.
Honestly, the references to the kids in these letters are the scariest thing to me. The Watcher tries to guess where all of the children are sleeping and wonders if the kids will go down to the basement where 'no one can hear them scream'. I'm sorry, but burn the house down. Just burn it down. That's too scary!
The letters kept coming. The Watcher wondered if 657 Boulevard called to the family "with its force within". WHAT FORCE!?!? This is SO scary. The Watcher also claimed that watching that house was a family duty for The Watcher. The Watcher's grandfather watched the house in the 1920s, the family then kept watch in the 1960s, and now it is The Watcher's turn.
The Watcher wants to make sure the house stays intact and that the new owners are aware of the home's history and that they honor it...whatever that means. The Watcher disapproved of changes the family was making to the house, warning them that changes were a bad move. The letters became angrier as The Watcher accused the new owners of changing too much.
The couple tried to go to the authorities, but no one really knew how to help. They also asked the previous owners if they had gotten letters and were told that they had one similar letter right before they moved, but they threw it out thinking it was an unhinged prank.
How does the mystery wrap up? Well, in real life we still don't know. Many people in the neighborhood were DNA tested, but nothing has come up conclusively. The family struggled to sell the house after all of this. In 2020 their son's friend rented it out for a while.
Ryan Murphy took the reigns and made this a series, but we still don't know who The Watcher is. For all I know, he's reading this right now.
