For today's Throwback Thursday, I wanted to go back to the 1970s - specifically 1970 itself. This was a sexy time. Sex was everywhere. Everyone was feeling groovy and liberated. And the chicks? They were loose and ready to prove it on camera. Let's talk about one surprising actress who went nude: Cloris Leachman in The People Next Door.
Now, if you're a Cloris fan (and who isn't?) then you aren't shocked to hear that she went nude. We all remember her fantastic role in 1971's The Last Picture Show as the seductive older woman who winds up getting down to her bra and underwear.
Cloris passed away earlier this year and was known for being a gentle, kind old lady, but she began her career as a beauty queen. She was even the runner-up in the 1946 Miss America pageant, so she knows how to be beautiful on a professional level.
She took on sexy roles in the 1970s and that includes The People Next Door. She joined Deborah Winter in this David Greene movie that sought to dive into a seemingly happy suburban family where nothing is what it seems. The plot follows a suburban New York couple who deal with the fact that their teenage daughter Maxie is a drug addict.
Deborah Winter plays Maxie is constantly tripping on LSD and her parents blame their hippie son (who is basically just considered a hippie because he has shaggy hair). Their fears are unwarranted, however, because their kid just has long hair, but they kick him out of the house. Maxie is actually buying her drugs from the people next door.
Cloris is one of the people next door, an alcoholic who doesn't mind that her kids buy and sell drugs. Obviously, this film is another reaction to the 60s. I'm not doing it as part of the Hippie Hotties because it's not overtly hippie. It's mostly a drug-scare movie that verges on exploitation. Sadly, it doesn't verge on SEXploitation which it could really use more of.
Deborah Winter is a trip when she shows us her bra and undies, but Cloris is the one that delivers her booty and sideboob in a dark scene in which she gets out of bed naked.
